CPB 425: PA 0837 Airline Coupe: Engine No 1091 AP (Original); Body No 2916 (Carbodies). PA 0837 left the factory on 26 April 1934, one of a batch of ten chasses to receive Airline bodies, built by Carbodies in Coventry. It was supplied to its first owner, Alfred Lansdell Mizen, on 14 December 1934 by T Hawkins & Sons (Epsom) Ltd. The dealer plate is still on the dashboard. It was fitted with the ‘Deluxe Extra Equipment’ package, - bonnet strap, headlamp stone-guards, quick-release filler caps on radiator and petrol tank, radiator and oil thermometers (with glove pockets blanked for these instruments), and 8-day clock mounted on a bracket underneath facia board. The total price for the car was £299 2s 6d. The earliest surviving Registration Book is a ‘Continuation Book’ issued by Surrey County Council on 22 January 1947, stamped ‘Old Book Retained’. Ownership of the car between 1934 and the Continuation Book being issued is uncertain. The car had three further owners until April 1962 when it was purchased by Ronald Harry Cass, who lived near Reading, as a ‘runner but only just’ for a ‘nominal sum’! In the mid-1970s, Ronald started a restoration that was to take 35 years! In 1992, the partly restored car passed to his son Richard, who completed the restoration, returning the car to the road with an MOT in 2011. Richard kept as much of the original car as possible, repairing rather than replacing parts. This included the Ash frame, where only those parts beyond repair were renewed. Old (dead) woodworm holes remain in the nearside door frame and the original Carbodies body number is still visible on the cross member below the windscreen. I bought the car from Richard in August 2019. The car was roadworthy, but had been little used since 2011 and lacked some original equipment. I recommissioned it over the winter of 2019-20, and sourced and fitted missing original items from the ‘Deluxe Extra Equipment’ package, adding a few things to improve safety in modern traffic, including flashing indicators, LED lights, driver’s sun visor and period exterior mirrors. Apart from these safety additions, the car is now close to its original specification, including colour, and has a current MOT certificate. The car has covered about 3000 miles since I have owned it, including several round trips of over 100 miles to Brooklands and Greenacres, where it has twice won the POO award for 4 cylinder cars. There are only two roadworthy P Type Airline coupes known in the UK, with one other currently being restored. Of the 42 built, there are about 15 known to survive with their original body styles worldwide. Several have been re-built with open bodies. PA0837 is possibly the most original roadworthy Airline. There is a short video featuring the car at Brooklands (copy and paste the text between the arrows) --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45gvAAYSjUE <--. Initial enquiries by email please.
