In March 1934, PA 0327 rolled out off the assembly area to start life as a black and red two seater. Its engine -stamped 590AP- was replaced by the factory within a year. Freshly re bored to .040”, they fitted 1840DP, which came, as 1840AP, from PA 1575. (This car’s engine was replaced by Messr. Tankard & Smith with engine number 2536AP.) Together with the new engine, a new guarantee plate was stamped accordingly and fitted to the bulkhead.

When I bought it, PA 0327 came with a PB engine. To make matters a little easier on the number front, this block was unstamped.

After an evening of going through the printed Register, I found 1840AP to be registered with PA 1502 to which originally 1740AP was fitted. This P-type was rebuilt by the late Jimmy Adams and was described in the 1996 Yearbook. It was nice to read how this engine survived after having been bought from Harry Lester by Jimmy in 1949 at the latest. I had a look at the car at the Brooklands centenary back in 2007.

Anyway, this is what I briefly told Oliver Richardson some five years ago.

Fast forward to Beaulieu 2016. I received a text on Saturday morning telling me of this PA block he had for sale and if I was interested. When I got to his stall, he showed me the block and casually said I should have a look at the number …

You get it, thanks to Oliver, I now need to convert my car back to (well, almost original) spec by preparing 1840DP and putting it back in chassis 327!

Look forward to seeing some of you at Zandvoort this weekend!

Cheers,
Thijs

What a surprise that must have been at Beaulieu! Congratulations Thijs, on having the original engine back. Great work making it possible, Oliver!

What a surprise, and for once a most welcome one. The odds of that happening must be very long. Gives me hope that under someones bench is resting 774 APB and that one day it will emerge into daylight.

Olli, I always knew that those number and letter stamps would come in useful one day
