Hi,

Maybe someone can help re speedometers, I have currently two J2s and owned others also, all having Smiths speedometers, have seen J's and F2s with Jaeger speedometers, are the Jaeger ones correct, is there a period where the cars were supplied with jaeger?
Thanks

Ashley

Chris,

October 1932 (the build date for J2353) seems very early for a chrono speedometer to have been fitted from new. Might it not have been a later addition/substitution or at least a special order. It certainly wasn't standard wear for J2s until the facelift of 1933.

Hello Simon, I have no way of knowing, I had four rev.counter/ speedo gauges in the dismantled remains, a ' Speedometer Company ' Rev counter ( probably off J4129 ), one smiths and two jaegar speedometers. Excuse my lack of knowledge, but I assume then that the smiths one is off J2353 ? Photo before they were restored by Patrick Henry. I sold the jaegar one on and kept the smiths one, the Speedometer Company one is beyond repair and I still have the second Jaegar as a spare. My problem was having little knowledge of the marque and two J2s, one early cycle wing and the other one a late swept wing which had competition history dismantled and all mixed together with many other non MG parts has made identification a tad difficult at times.

Chris,

Your Smith's speedo is correct for J2353 and the Jaeger one is correct for J4129.

It may be that Speedometer Supply Co rev counters were the instruments of choice if a rev counter was requested as that is what my car was supplied with. It was probably a lot less expensive than the Jaeger chronometric one used in the racing cars.

So Simon, are we suggesting the Jeager speedometer is a later addition? If so where does this info come form? my J's J2042 (early car) and J2625 both with smiths speedos, I have had 5 J's and all Smiths

J2351 has it's original Smith's Speedo/Rev counter, as well as a Jaeger oil pressure gauge and Lucas ammeter. I guess Abingdon was spreading their purchasing around!

The factory parts list specifies a change of instruments at J3576 (early September 1933 and a swept wing car) which is generally accepted to be the change from Smith's to Jaeger speedometer and oil gauge. The ammeter was seemingly always Lucas.

The fact that some forty, fifty, sixty or more years later a car has a particular brand of instrument doesn't make it 'original' unless there is a very clear evidence to back it up. Many of these instruments, particularly speedometers I would have thought, will have been replaced during the lifetime of the car.

Found this advert, Motor Sport March 1933, looks as though these Speedometer Company items were available for J2s. I had the remains of one of these in with the dismantled parts, it was not salveable and probably was fitted to J4129.
