(EDIT: title was wrong)

Hi all,

My N-type has two HV2 carbs. One of them has an aluminium piston, the other has a brass piston. I would like to trade the aluminium one (plus dome) for a brass piston + dome. The aluminium had a closed top, the brass one is open.

Anyone interested?

Thanks, regards, Andrys

The HV2 carb is 1 1/8" not 1 1/4" and almost certainly had alloy pistons, not brass. They should weigh around 155/165 grams according to a small survey I did a couple of years ago.

Hi Simon, thank you for your reply. You are right, the carb size is 1.1/8" and I corrected the title of this topic.

Attached a photo of what I have. The brass one weighs 240 grams, the alu 163 grams.

Anyone wanting to sell or trade a second brass one?

Thanks, Andrys

It's another alloy one you want, Andrys. The brass one is way too heavy and is from a later carb with the oil damper - hence the hole in it.

I second Simons opinions. The brass piston is too heavy and will not allow the piston to rise suffciently for full power. Your aluminium one is correct. Beware - there are many aluminium ones with different weights.

Good luck

There shouldn't be holes for the damper on any Triple-M car. The damper didn't come into production until after Triple-M production ceased.

Thanks a lot for the responses. (Obviously) a newbie here, learning something new every day . Your patience is much appreciated.

So there I go: who has an aluminium piston plus dome without a hole for sale/trade?

Don't forget, Andrys, that you want a 'matched pair', i.e. both pistons the same weight. In my small survey, N Type pistons were in fact 155 grams, so at the very light end of the scale. I suspect that two at 163/165 would work OK however.

The one on the left is not aluminium, it's Mazak metal which is much heavier. Aluminium ones have an iron ring in the top and are a lot more common. In my experience finding two Mazak ones the same weight is next to impossible. It might be frowned upon by purists but light non-weighted pistons with matched springs work well though they might need the dampers with them.
