I was under my M yesterday (337) and discovered that mine does not have an alloy sump (certainly not like any of the above). Is this normal for an early car, or should all cars have alloy sumps as pictured above?

I was told that early cars have the 'tin' sump as used on the Morris Minor, I have one for my car. Perhaps it was the cars built at Abingdon. Here's mine, not yet attached.

Hi Rob,
Yes, your early Oxford-built M Type would have been fitted with a steel sump - exactly the same item as fitted to the Minor. I believe that the alloy sumps first appeared on Abingdon-built cars some time in 1930, but I'm not sure we know the chassis number of the first car so fitted.
Since these 'tin' sumps can often have slightly distorted flanges (unlike the machined alloy sumps), you should use a cork (Morris Minor) sump gasket and not the thin paper ones supplied by the MG parts suppliers, unless they are also offering cork ones these days. |

Thanks Ian.
Interestingly, I can see that there has been some oil ooze around the bell housing - but not convinced that this is from the sump gasket flange - rear oil seal maybe? |
