I am going through the same process discussed on a previous topic, now locked, (12" Bakes), i.e. I need to improve the brakes on my NA. So, 3 questions for George (Eagle)regarding the original topic. 1. Any further news on your Alfin drums for the L type ? 2. Am I correct in assuming these are 12" dia Alfins ? 3. The first line on that original topic said "When I rebuilt my NB I used new steel brake drums which were very effective - I think the wheels would have locked if I used the hand brake in an emergency stop!" what, therefore, convinced you to fit Alfin on the L type ?
And a general question, what does the forum feel about fitting 13" K type drums to a N type ? |

Brian. My personal preference would be to go for Q Type brake drums, which I understand are still available from a manufacturer in Belgium. In my opinion, much more appropriate than Alfins or K Type drums and possibly just as effective. I think that the fact that they would be brand new and perfectly circular would result in much better stopping power than what you have at present.

Thanks for that Colin, I like the idea. I haven`t yet managed to find any more details on the web, maybe our friends on the continent will be able to provide more information and contact details. |

Hello Brian
The new drums I fitted to NA0960 were supplied by Derek Davis who at the time had a precision engineering business in Slough. I cannot recall what metal they were made from but as I indicated before they were extremely effective.
Your existing drums might be improved by having them skimmed to remove any glazing which might have formed. I do recall the late Terry Andrews mentioned he borrowed a device which had been designed to accurately skim 12 inch drums. I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this?
I have a friend who has Alfin drums fitted to his T type and is very pleased with them. I will shortly have the new Alfin's fitted to the L2 and can let you know how they perform. They certainly look nice and save a lot of weight.

George, the special device you refer to is for skiming linings, not drums. I recall, the Derek Davis patterns went to Tom Dark. Colin, do you know who makes the Holden & Hunt drums?

Rich. No, i don't know who makes the Holden & Hunt pattern Q Type drums. but I will make enquiries. In the meantime, I was hoping that one of our Continental cousins was going to chip in with the info. Could it be Nuyts of Antwerp ? Will get back in due course.

A quick question on 12 inch brake drums. What is the internal diameter on new drums? Mine look to have a lip on the inside of 1mm wear and are 307.5 mm across. Thanks Malcolm |

12" x 25.4 = 304.8 mm perhaps your lip is 1.35 mm |

Thanks Coracle, Obvious isn’t it, I shall measure them again, more carefully.
