Hypothetical question. Does an MOT exempt car on SORN and which was put on SORN prior to the MOT exemption ruling, need to now be MOT'd before it can be taxed.

No, as long as you are able to sign the VII2, if applying at a post office, or tick a box if applying on-line(that the vehicle has not been substantially changed within the past thirty years).
