I recently rediscovered some old photos of my Dad's amongst which was this one.



It's from a postcard (unused) so I've no idea of when or where it was taken but it's a Belfast registration number. Anyone know which car it is, and where it might have been taken?

It would be interesting to know what vehicle originally carried the number CZ 9237. It would have been issued in the late summer/autumn of 1935 but it would have been unlikely that a single seater racing car would have been registered as a road car. But I gather that it was common practice in Northern Ireland in post war years for racing cars to be given a 'registration number' if they were travelling over the border to race in Southern Ireland. I suspect that the customs officers didn't really check things too closely so a log book from any 1935 MG could have been used to provide the R Type with an identity to get it over the border and back again. Which would fit in with it being Bobby Baird's car.

Try right click on photo and then choose "saveas" then select folder of choice on your cumputer. Shouod work fine and give same quality of mage as displayed.

Only two R-types were equipped 1935 with the McEvoy „Inter-Cooler“
One was Briaults RA0258, the other was RA0259, which is shown on the photo.
Simon, your photo could have been taken in 1937, as the unpainted front apron can be discovered, which the car had in that year. Bobby Baird offered it for sale at the end of 1935.

Hello Gerhard, I have diffculty in recognising an inter-cooler in the photos - was it a water/air heat exchanger inside the rubber hose between the supercharger and the inlet manifold?

Bruce, the McEvoy „Inter-Cooler“ is the rubber hose between the supercharger and the inlet manifold.
I never saw a real one, but the enlarged photo shows, that obviously the wire-loops penetrated the hose, came in contact with the hot air-petrol mixture, and could dispose of some heat to the outside.

Thanks Gerhard, I've dealt with many different types of automotive heat exchangers in my professional career but never seen one like the McEvoy Inter-Cooler before - things have progressed a bit!

So what types of supercharger inter-coolers are permissible on 1930's cars, I wonder?

I've emailed you the photo, but at a higher resolution than 72dpi which gives an image smaller than the original (at least on my screen!). I've also sent you a photo of Dodson's NE at the 1934 TT which was also among my Dad's collection.

CZ 9237 is recorded here as being on RA 0259 as Gerhard says. This is currently with Pip Bucknall in Oz.

I would think that the wire loops are likely to be copper and will be joined to a steel or copper pipe which is then held into the system with the short sections of rubber hose, as can be seen in your photo. If the full length of the intercooler was basically a rubber hose, I think it would be a bit of a baloon shape with 28 psi going through it.

I am pretty sure I have seen this type of heat exchanger on some large diesel engine intercoolers, although not in "pipe" form, rather short sections of small bore pipe in a cast aluminium box.
