I had a used L2 body which had a University Motors badge attached. It was round and made out bronze and stamped I think. Anyway it was stolen at a T-Register meeting that I held at my place one night. It did not matter since I was trying to give it to a deserving cause. It was not suitable for my (restored) F2 (which, in any case, came to Oz in chassis form). It just left a bad taste in my mouth to think that one of my MG friends (or their rellies who came along) had deliberately stolen it! I advertised in the Club magazine, no questions asked, but I never saw it again! |

Hi All, I would be very interested if anyone has a badge or even a photograph of a dashboard badge from Munfords of Plymouth (Abbey garage) who 1st. sold my PA in 1935.

I liked the story of the American car which apparently had some voice/speed indicator which when a certain maximum speed was reached announced "This is St Christopher speaking, you are on your own now".
My Austin 7 has a very nice enamelled badge inscribed "Wade's Garage,Worthing" which ties up with its original Brighton registration.
The J2 was supplied by Browell & Co. Ltd. of 64/66 Granby Road,Leicester but has no supplier's badge.

My car was purchased through SMT , (their main business seem to have been a very large bus company). They do not appear to have ever issued their own St Christopher dash badge. Perhaps St Christopher did not work north of the border.

Many UK suppliers' badges used the French version of the Saint, with the motto 'Régarde St. Christophe puis va t'en rassuré' rather than the English text 'Behold St. Christopher and go your way in peace'.
Whether this use of French was a convention among the badge-makers such a J.R.Gaunt, or demanded by the public, isn't clear eighty years on but the VSCC still retain the French text in their main badge, for instance.
More franco-phobe MG owners who need the Saint's protection may need to seek out an English-text badge, though, given Cecil Kimber's admiration for French sports cars, the French text may serve well on a MMM. With ancient cars, any helping hand is welcome.
St. Christopher had no monopoly on journey supervision. One of my French bicycles still carries its original badge with an image of 'La Vierge de la Route' and I am happy to accept the alternative when I ride it.
Sadly, the patron saint for my trade, St. Crispin, has no car badge.

Keith
This topic has spread to the D0254 and F0313 strings. I posted the following on 0313:
Enamel badges.
See the comments from alan witham, Powerplus under the D0254 thread.
SMTC was the wholesaler, it was probably A&D Fraser who had the enamel badges, though the one on VD3424 is bakerlite and engraved and from CS Grant of Central Motors Glasgow. I think he got the car direct from Abingdon as SMTC doesn't feature in the file and there is quite a bit of correspondence about guarantee issues.
Cheers

Here are a few MG suppliers plaques from my collection. It's interesting to see how many different versions there were of the University Motors plaques. These are all genuine pre war examples, I don't buy reproductions. Cheers Ian.

Is it possible that the UM badge with no enamel has had the enamel removed at some stage? Can anyone date the badges? I suspect that the fully enamelled one is actually quite recent?

Alan, Thanks for that information. They look too new to put on a PB!! Hence my hopes of identifying the correct one for early 1936. I much prefer the one without any enamel or the one with damage to the enamel!
Does anyone have one on a UM supplied car dating from 1935 to 1936 (approx) and could they post a picture showing position on the dashboard please.
