The first owner of J4129 was D.H. Cottingham.

Is there any information of Mr. D. H. Cottingham.

From Mike Hawke's ' How They Ran ' Page 114 describes J4129 and the awards from the West Hants Automobile Club Trial and the Junior Car Club Brooklands Rally from 1935.

In the following cars section ( J4136 ), on the 22nd November 1936, driver G.F.Pentony achieves 2nd class awards in the Harrow Car Club Cottingham Trophy Trial. Is there a connection between my Mr. Cottingham and the 1936 trial ? Seems too much of a coincidence for there not to be.

Some digging on Ancestry turns up one Dudley Howard Cottingham of Tudor House, Wise Lane, Mill Hill, Middlesex, who died on April 6th 1935 at Field End Road, Harrow. Born in Southgate 1906, son of a builder who was originally from Wakefield. Looks to be your man.

Since no house number or name is given for the place of death and it's a very long road, I wondered if it was perhaps a road accident. I was right. This is from The Times, April 8th 1935, page 16.

I wonder if Miss Gush was related to the Brooklands driver?

Oh dear, How tragic, this is the man and thankyou for your efforts which have proven very fruitful, this is why the event was Memorial, Well done You !

The address is correct. I will now attach a memorial plaque to J4129 in his honour, I wonder if he was driving J4129 and this is the car that ended up upside down ?

I will pass this on to Ann and Jeremy Hawke, I am sure that they are not aware.

I don't have a current subscription, but this accident was reported in more detail in the April 6th issues of eight evening papers which are available on the British Newspaper Archive. It was apparently witnessed by a friend of Cottingham's whose surname was Jackson - probably just a coincidence of names, of course!

My other hunch was right too. Marjorie Emily May Gush was the sister of Geoffrey Bryan Gush, whose 350cc Blackburne-engined record car Vitesse (!!) set AIACR Class J flying mile and kilometre records at Brooklands in 1934. There's an MG connection, in that Gush's records were eventually beaten by Rafaele Cecchini's Moscerino on the Firenze-Mare autostrada in 1939.

Found Attached ' Nottingham Evening Post ' and ' Hartlepool Mail ' both Saturday 6th April 1935. Also to discover that Cottingham was the Secretary of the Harrow light Car Club and unusually for that time started driving at 17.

That does actually appear to be the same Marjorie Gush. I've found a travel record with the correct address and her occupation described as teacher, arriving at London from Malta on February 3rd 1935.

Thanks Nick. Recently I bought a new Canon printer, and the software which came with it provides a feature called "My Image Garden" It might well enable me to enhance any images scanned, but I am having great difficulty in getting it to do what I want it to do !

I have now a copy of D.H.Cottinghams death certificate which I have attached, sorry if this offends but felt that the information contained may be of interest. It would appear that his death would have been instant...and not by drowning.

Section 1, When and where died : off the scan reads ' Dead body found Sixth April 1935 in a brook at Fiels End Road South Harrow, Harrow, Mx '

I wonder if this Mr. Jackson is the one and the same friend who was following D. H. Cottingham on the fatal night.

Some famous names in there! Mrs AE Moss is of course Stirling's mother. The eponymous Sidney Allard and fellow-Allardist Goff Imhof. And Alta and ERA exponent Douglas Briault.
