Greg, to keep the record straight the L types had a Lucas ST 38 rear lamp aka pork pie.
Cheers Sven |

Greg I beg to differ based on the factory photos reproduced on the excellent Dutch site http://www.mgmmm.com/pictures/l-type/historical Two Pictures where you can see the rear lamp on the L1 tourers. One of them is from the prototype and might be different ( that is the one with non L type bonnet handles).

Hi again That is the prototype pic, different bonnet handles, different position of wiper, different instrument lamps, different rear lamp and perhaps more. I enlose two different factory pics and one that has been cropped showing the lamp.
Cheers
Sven Sorry my computor doesn't like the photos. I'll try to mail them directly to you Greg.

Yes it does, and its on the road. I borrowed the rad shell from it years ago to have another replicated. It lives in West Yorkshire

I can confirm from my research that the Salonettes were fitted with a single Rotax 706 rear lamp i.e. D & F type but not 100% about the J-types ... just can't the production of these going beyond the J anyway.
I have a pair for the rear of my D-type Salonette

They are a stunning lamp a lot lot nicer than a st 38 pork pie lamp. I contemplated using a single Lucas tf 201 tail lamp on my j2 as original next to the number plate then using a pair of these higher up between the wings and the petrol tank! They would be extra stop lamps and perfect indicators perfect in modern traffic! My dad said it will look stupid but I don't think so! |

Personally I think this is the only way to go with a J2. I used regular ST38s but I think the effect is both pleasing and safer as the lights are much more visible to following traffic.

I'm reactivating this thread since I am now producing LED light boards specifically designed to fit the Rotax 706 lamp. Red tail lamp LEDs and orange brake or turn signal LEDs. More information and ordering may be found at www.brittrix.com.

I noticed this tail light on my reference material for my L1, and knew it was not the ST38. But the pic although not sharp shows no lense fitted. So is it a Rotax, I think Gregs correct and it is. Often you see factory photos of their new models hastily assembled and photographed with parts that weren't fitted on the production models.
Richards friend with the prototype L1 preceding mine, would be great to see such an original car?

I have an original Rotax rear lamp that came with the dismantled parts, its in good condition so was probably from J2353.I can upload a photo later if it would help when back in the UK. ( Its not for sale ).
The other Brooklands J2 4129 had a carbide lighting system, not sure how that was applied. ( Photos attached ).
