Ibex Marine is the only place that I've been able to source Marlow 3mm ( no4) Glace , 8 plait cotton cord which I'm told is ideal for binding a steering wheel. It's white - though I'll probably be dying mine green.
Problem is Ibex Marine have a minimum order of £50 plus postage which means I have to order x2 100 metre boxes - total inc vat and pp is £79.75
I've calculated that it will take close to 40 metres - I know, I was astounded too!
Firstly does anyone know of another supplier?
If not would anyone be interested in buying the excess? Possibly 3 people each taking 50 metres @ £20 +pp
Very best Tim Luffingham |

Tim,
I use No. 4 Glace cord for binding road springs, so perhaps someone would want your excess for that purpose. After I have bound the springs I paint the glace cord with black (ebony) wood dye.

I bought my glacé cord no 4 from Odell & Co telephone number 01908 567440. www.odellandco.co.uk. It comes in white and you will need to dye it prior to being used. 100 metres will bind all four J2 brings.

I also used Glacé chord to binding the springs on the L2. I bought it from. Firm in Bristol, I probably still have the details.
The chord was dyed with black dye bought from Lewis. I dyed the chord in the washing machine - my wife was not too impressed!!

I dyed mine in a bucket but it did take two attempts to achieve a consistent deep black colour. It is not cheap but my springs look great.

Thanks All for advice - Ollie offline last night, and Peter G for reminding me that the springs use the same.
Waiting to hear back from Rod Green as to whether he wants the remaining 150 metres - or just 50......
Allan McNab and Andrew Briggs are top of the list for 50 metres each once Rod Green clarifies.
Either way it seems that all of the cord now accounted for.
Very best

OK - I'll pass the remaining 150 metres to Rod, and buy a 3rd 100 metre box for Allan and Andy to split between them
Thanks to Chris ( Blueberry) I'll check out Odell & Co for their pricing.

I am actually binding springs tomorrow with green glade chord I have had for 20 years. Does anyone have any idea how much each front and rear spring will use. I only have one large bobbin, so may need some more.
I also have another car to do next month, so will need some more I suspect!

Hi Richard,
I bought 100m of the glacé cord and once the dying was complete I divided the cord into two 50 metre lengths just make the cord easier to handle during the binding. Each 50 metre length did a front and rear spring with ease, but not convinced there is another spring in what is left over. A word of advice , make sure you wind the cord onto a 20mm square stick or something similar rather than into a ball, this will avoid your hands coming into contact with the cord when applying tension. You will be pulling on the stick rather than the cord and your hands will remain in tact, blister free!

Gents, Just 'phoned Odell and Co. and have been informed that they no longer supply Glace chord. Very friendly chap gave me the details of their former supplier who I can confirm will supply 100m lengths in white (only). They are Kent Twines, Liverpool 0151 5251601. They do not take cards, send a cheque...£38.80+VAT+P&P ( which works out at £62.16 delivered) gets you 100m......
Hope the above is useful, all best......Duncan.
