Dear Forum:

Tried this question on another thread with no response,
so I will start again here.

My question is it possible to fit an overdrive to a F model with ENV
gearbox?
I known elsewhere on this forum it is mentioned that some MMM models
have had this done.
All the best.

I have no idea but Barrie Dean is the person who has developed the fitting of an o/d box to the standard Wolesley gearbox.

Dear George and Forum:

Thank-you for your comment.
I have come across Barrie Dean's name in many threads on this forum.
I missed him at Stoneleigh.
Is there a way to contact him, as I am informed he is not a forum follower.
Other comments welcomed /invited.
All the best.

Barrie is the man to ask , but I'm sure he once told me there wasn't room to fit one to the F gearbox

John. Your information about Barrie Dean not being a forum follower is not correct. If you refer to the recent thread about M Type big and small end torque values, you will find a posting from Barrie on the 14th of this month. If you click on his name you will be able to send a private e-mail to him (if the system works correctly - which it usually does). Barrie is located at Arnold, Nottingham.

Dear Forum:

Have had a email from Barrie Dean, re. overdrive on ENV gearbox
question recently post.
The answer is" NO."
Not enough room. The only route is to change gearbox.
Other suggestions to achieve long distance touring car?
All the best.

How about ways to up the BHP.
Other modifications to engine and the like?
The end game is touring car.
All the best.

An F type has a 9/43 diff as standard George which is virtually identical to an 8/39

Dear Peter, Oliver and Forum:

The devil is in the detail.
The engine block is the same in all models the difference is the bore/stoke and tune.
So what modifications to achieve touring car?.
In keeping with period.
Great thread! More please.
All the best.

John, If you want to keep within period then leave the car as is and modify your touring routes, ie keep off motorways etc. F types, and most other Triple-M cars, were very capable touring cars in period on the roads available then. Those roads are mostly still there, you just have to look for them and plan your routes accordingly. It's quite enjoyable really and the best way to put a smile on your face by not 'battling' with other vehicles on busy motorways and dual carriageways.

Dear Terry and Forum:

Thank-you for latest email.
If it was that easy!!!

Large lorries and motorways have improved our daily lives.( most of the times).
But they make my plans a nightmare fit only the suicidal.
I am prepared for discomfit of driving a older car and the extra time that come with it, but draw the line at dying all be it in a beautiful car.
I am thinking in terms of period modifications which should make long distance touring possible and be totally reversible if required.
So what are your top ideas?

John Bakewell
