This is a picture of MG557 taken presumably before the war.

It comes courtesy of Sam Christie (see General post on this car).

Anyone any ideas as to who might be competing and where?

And as Sam asks, is it a blower?

Cheers

An excellent article on the Branches Park (and Hexton Manor) Speed Trials appears in the Spring 2017 edition of the VSCC Bulletin and is well worth reading. In the final event held at Branches Park on the 21st February 1931, M F L Falkner won the 850cc Class with his supercharged 847cc Midget with a time of 24.00 seconds. FTD was made by C S Cockerell's 418cc Velocette which covered the 550 yard course in 19.5 seconds.

It looks as if MFL Falkner was the first owner then...

He moved in illustrious circles see:
https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21906/lot/351/

So not surprising the car was supercharged.

MFL Falkner seems to have been Chairman of Cheshire Car Circuit Ltd and to do with Oulton Park.

There is more about him here http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/database/drivers/4430-maurice-falkner. He owned two M Types it would seem, one second hand and one new... I suspect MG557 was the second given that he competed with it n 1931...

Gosh, I know that car in the auction.

I walked past it many times on my way home from school, for lunch, in the 1950's. It was parked outside the Stamford Arms in Bowdon, Cheshire, where presunably the owner was resting. And I lusted after it even then; all those gauges and knobs to twiddle!
