When changing the oil filter on models which Abingdon provided with an alloy filter housing, how do others get all the dirty oil out of that housing? Removing the housing at every oil change would seem a bit laborious!

Morris Lubricants supply a pump with which to draw oil from their 25 ltr drums and I did think that would do the job quite well, but I'd be interested to know what others do.

Cheers,

Dave

Dave,

I use a turkey baster, a plastic tapered tube with a suction bulb on the end, then wipe out with a rag or paper towel. Has worked well for me.

I have a special tool, a tablespoon with the spoon part at right angles to the handle. Then a wooden dowel with a rag on the end.

Dave. Fortunately l have a proper suction ' pump' which is similar to a bicycle pump so would not an old bike pump do the same job ?. It removes 95% of the oil then a wipe around as previously suggested, job done.

Dave,
when you have a P on N type, undo the union for the oil pressure gauge, open the housing's lid and let drip the content of the filter housing during the night in a pan under the engine.
This is even more advantageous, when you do it before taking out the filter and avoid the usual oily mess.

But this method does not work for a K or L type, as there is not such a union for the oil pressure gauge.

Thank you Gerhard. My car is indeed a P so perhaps I should try that!

That looks good Simon. I can see it's a Sealey, but what do they call it or what do they sell it for? I can't believe they're selling a "Triple M oil filter housing emptying pump"!

Cheers,

Dave

Dave,

It's the Sealey AK46 Suction Gun (not to be confused with the AK47 of course!) intended for axles and gearboxes.

An Amazon search came up with this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Home-Garden/Large-Plastic-100ml-Syringe-120cm-plastic-tubing/B00JERC6EI/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_60_lp_t_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3VT9XK748VDET0VYRHAN. At £1.70 it's worth a try, so I've ordered one. I wish this thread had started sooner, as I have recently spent 20 minutes clearing my oil filter housing using a bent spoon, then bits of old Y fronts and long-nosed pliers
