If this might help anyone with a location, the car ahead with man stood beside appears to have the reg number BZ-15?0, maybe 1530.

BZ is a County Down issue, with the numerals from 954-1525 issued in 1932. Plates BZ-1526-2089 were 1933 issues.

There is too much smoke behind lead car to see the plate.
Could this then be in Northern Ireland, or possibly, over the border. Nice straight road with a downhill start.

One sees an Ulster in the foreground and Ulster all around.

Is this The Seven Mile Straight, Antrim BT41 4QT ?

Indeed, Ballybannon it is! The hand written caption on the back of the photo says "Victor Ferguson gets well away in the works J3 while Lloyd Cowdy on a L-type Magna starts off in reverse." This was the first knock-out round for Class 2 - Cars, Other than Racing Cars, up to 1,100 c.c. and Supercharged Cars up to 860 c.c. - in which Ferguson comfortably beat Cowdy by almost 20 seconds on the 1.2 mile hill. Presumably starting off in reverse didn't help!

I have a mental checklist just before the green light: First gear, handbrake off, goggles down. Very embarrassing to start in reverse (it hasn't happened yet), and not popular with the marshals.

Simon, is there any indication of the date of the writing on the back of the photo?
Interesting that the car is referenced as the 'works J3' , would the note have been made in period?

Tim,

As the advertisement Sam posted says, the hill climb took place on 10 June 1933 and Victor Ferguson was driving J2024/JB659. I think this is fairly well documented as being in effect a prototype for the J3. Interestingly, the report of the event has the car listed as 847 cc. The caption was written around the time the photo was taken.

Thanks Simon. I was interested in how the car may have been described at the time.
It had a 750cc engine fitted for the 1933 Monte Carlo Rally however is noted as having a standard J2 engine fitted before heading to Ireland which may explain the engine capacity.
Cheers

Tim,

M.G. claimed it to be a 'standard J3'! Can you offer any info on the fact that it was supercharged, but with an 847 cc engine? This is a rather good picture of it at, or near, the start line at Ballybannon with Victor Ferguson sporting a natty line in berets!

P.S. Interestingly, at Craigantlet just over two months later the car was listed as 746 cc.
