Still looking for the center bearing cheese for a PA engine, will be in England over the Christmas season so have a UK shipping address is that's easier, only part needed to start my engine rebuild? |

With the continuing requirement for this obviously rare and difficult part as well as the main bearing cheeses for the six cylinder cars I cannot understand why our suppliers fail to fill this particular void.

Does anyone have the sizes of the cheeses for the various engine types. On the 6 cylinder cars there has to be two diameters, one smaller at the gearbox end to be able to get the crank into the block.

Sports and Vintage Motors list the PA centre bearing "cheeses" at £247.20 but I don't know if they are available. I note that the main terminal building at Charles de Gaulle airport is the same shape. It is known as the Camembert. Call me Moonraker. |

Hello alll.
I was at Sports and Vintage this morning and spoke with Mike Dowley. He said he doesn’t do the main bearing cheeses as they are a problem to cast !
Looks like we’ll be stuck.Does anyone have a pair of cheeses for a K / L or N type available?
Chris.

Sorry Chris, I took the photos and the measurements a long time ago, and both cheeses do their duty in the engine meanwhile. So nothing for sale - - - on the contrary, I am looking for a pair myself. Gerhard |

when I needed a pair for a six I made a pair from steel and white metalled them direct and didn't use shells . most machine shops could make these from solid bar and mill them . when rebuilding a six I found the original ones were worn and loose , the new ones were made to fit the block as the block was also worn , when tightening the main bolts the old bearings there was room to get a 4 thou feeler gauge . Screwing up the bolts tight would probably cracked the block . |

Andy ,that sounds like good news , do we need to place an order for a pair for a six now?
Adrian, thanks for that, you make some good points.I had intended to make some but more pressing projects have caused delay on that front. Will probably opt for the ones from Andy now.
Regards,
Chris. |

Andy, if you choose to make the cheeses in steel, may I make the following recommendations: 1. Be sensitive to the material which you choose. Some steels accept tinning in the babbitt process better than others. 2. The I.D. of the cheeses made for Phoenix cranks will be larger than for standard cranks. 3. When boring the finished ID, it is preferable to follow with a thread boring tool to produce a rough bore with a minimum threads per inch to enhance babbitt adherence. From an engine builder, Chris |
