Engine rebuild fund running out fast!
Looking for used, good condition, 57mm forged pistons with floating pins for Phoenix rods.

Thanks Dave, your reply much appreciated.
I have a new block so would hope to bore for 57mm pistons.
I wonder if Chris (Westbury) ever found the six he was after?

Hello, Bernard.
Just noticed your comments. The answer is no, I didn’t ever find any more of these pistons, unfortunately !
I hope you are more successful.
Cheers,
Chris |

Hi Bernie, it is of course entirely up to you what you do with your new block but I chose a different route. As the new blocks are made for use as PA or PB and as I would not be destroying history, I opted for 60mm bore. Just a thought.
Good luck either way,
Dave |

Thanks Dave. 60mm. Now that is food for thought!

A J2 block may not be quite so accommodating! But if not, 60 thou oversize, or 58.5mm, is probably feasible.

Silly of me Simon! For some reason I'd got the idea into my head that we were talking of a P. Perhaps Claire's right; dementia here we come.

A Chromidium should accommodate 60mm Simon.
You would need to check your block casting spec Bernard although these were typically fitted to Morris Minors, some Ms and, C types I believe.

Thanks Richard.
My block is a new casting from S and V for J2, so I think that I’ll go for 57mm pistons at present.
That said, the discussion is very interesting concerning what can be done with different blocks. I did have a Morris block in the engine that suffered a failed crank but it was not Chromidium and was not a sound basis for a rebuild.

Hello Bernie. Are you going racing? If not,I would just use standard JP or similar.Weigh them, gap the rings, should not give you any problems.

Dear Robin,
The more I’ve read up on the topic and from the helpful replies here, I think my planned use of the car would be well served by standard pistons as you and others have suggested. New ones are affordable in my budget, I’m pleased to discover.
I’m after a reliable road-going engine and I’ve come to understand better the amazing range of specifications to which people build their engines; especially the high revving racing cars!
Many thanks to everyone for such helpful guidance.

My understanding is that the Colin Tieche block patterns now used were made to accommodate a thicker cylinder wall to accommodate 60mm.
The problem however with new block castings is discovery of occasional porosity in bores when machined to size, so it can be a risk if you get to 60mm and find an imperfection as it then just adds expense to the job

Blimey something else to worry about!
Good point Richard. What a horror it would be to uncover a casting flaw when bored to limits. I suppose liners would have to go in.
I’m going to bore to recommended clearance for whatever 57mm pistons I finally fit. That’ll give me a few tries if boring reveals flaws.

It certainly doesn't happen every time Bernard but something certainly to be wary of. Close inspection recommended

Closing statement.
Have ordered standard pistons. Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge, experience and advice. I’ll weigh them and set gaps as suggested by Robin.
