My son (23) is very keen to do some light competition in the VSCC. Ideally looking for a Midget that has modern crank and rods. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Kind regards Bruce

Have you seen this Bruce. If I was looking I might be tempted, it's cheap enough to allow fir crank and rods to be done at some time. Looks nice to https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1091560

That did look like an awfully good price. When I bought my j2 about 3 years ago you very rarely saw a car offered below 30 thousand - now there are 5 just in ‘cars for sale’ here (including recently sold and admittedly a couple were projects). 23 thousand for a smart looking car is a shock though. What’s going on? I’ve been trying to buy a healey 100 recently and every time I look online they seem to have gone UP by another couple of thousand! Are these vagaries something people are familiar with? Should I just relax? As my father once advised “you’ll never lose money on an old car. As long as you never try to sell it!”

I really hope it's gone to a new young next generation owner. :)
My fear is, we see it for sale again soon with the first "2" changed for a "3" in the asking price :(

Which is exactly where it should be Colin, unless you want all our car values to drop like stones. MMM prices already starting to tumble as next generation move to Healeys etc. I should add I was not the lucky one.
Cheers, BW.

If you look on the Octagon Car Club site (www.mgoctagoncarclub.com) cars for sale, there is an honest looking TA for £22.5 near Belfast.

Not sure how up to date the ad is.

The TA is a very nice car. Belongs to a local Ulster Vintage Car Club member and it was certainly still for sale at the beginning of February.

Thanks to both Barney and Simon. Very grateful for your help but Jack is after an OHC car ideally.
Cheers Bruce

Generally there's a good selection on the Cars for Sale section of this web site.

that one did have a Wolseley block in it, but good value nevertheless.

Another nice red J2 went at H&H the week before last for £19k (plus premium, so £21k to the buyer)

As we move to an electric future, I believe all classics will suffer. It seems 80s and 90s modern classics are in vogue at the moment and interest in top end 50s and 60s cars remains there (e-types, healeys etc)

Unfortunately I think it will be the pre-war era that will suffer earlier than the rest. VSCC and motorsport isn't cheap either.

And here (today) is what looks like a nice M Type offered at under £17k. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1094417

Should we start to panic?? I (age 57) have persuaded my wife that a good chunk of our retirement prospect is well lodged in a shed full of various prewar cars : Austin 7s, MG, Riley in the fond expectation that they 'can't go wrong'. I must say it's been a most satisfactory arrangement for the last 20 years or so but then I have rarely tried to sell any!

I agree that electrifying these things would be a bad (and expensive) idea. It would rob them of their 'clockwork mouse' charm.
What else can we do to persuade a next wave of enthusiasts I wonder?

By the way this thread seems to have gone a bit off piste - the original poster did want a car for his young son. I hope we're not putting him off - he may be the only new recruit within sight!

John, I'm a similar age ... though on the right side :-)

Most of my car-type friends are after M3s, Quattros and fast Fords (I know ... I should re-evaluate my circle of friends!). But that's the reality.

Plus car-type people are in decline. Let alone classics, many in their 20s to 40s don't even want to own a car. The vast majority of new cars are on 3 years PCP deals which just roll into the next one. There's is little pride in car ownership. Its a necessary evil to get between two places and disrupts social media time. Its a generational shift. Then you have urbanisation (people moving into cities with mass transport), new housing (no garages), greater debt (no money for capitally intensive toys) and then there's EVs (younger people really do want to do their bit for the environment). If that wasn't enough ... driverless cars coming in around 5 years time. Imperial college recently predicted that people born next year will never need a driving licence to travel in their own cars.

BTW I do have two classics but am realistic in that their value may well decline.

As a petrolhead I disagree that electrifying things is a bad idea. Its is the future, it does help the environment and the driving experience is superb for an everyday, commuting, family hack type car.

The emissions from all the classics out there is irrelevant. they are so sparsely used I don't believe emissions type reasons will reduce their value or see then 'banned' as some suggest. Its just a society shift in what younger generations of people want

Come to the Brands Hatch triple M racing meet.
Enough 30 something (and younger) racing.

And if the classic car market crash can please happen quickly then I might be able to afford another and Bruce’s son can get started to!
