??? Thoresby Hall
If it was the early 70's then probably Wilsic Hall near Donny

At that time the car was owned by an old chap called Herbert Swallow from near Huddersfield. He was driven around in it by his grandson

I remember Mr Swallow and his grandson. It was people like Herbert that got me into triple-m cars.

This is chassis number 2M3738.

The Register has very little information on this lovely looking M type. Our Registrar for the M types is Mike Dalby who would love to hear of any news on the car..

Is the chassis number quoted for this car correct? 2M3738 seems too high.

Strangely, what appears to have been a late car has been restored in almost every way to look like an early M-type.

The 1982 Register has this car as 2M3138 & as a 12/12 replica replica - which it certainly is not -

The car has an early side valance with hole for the front brake rod.
The front valance is also of the early 6 louvre type. However the wheels are the later ones - and rear hinged doors, and early headlight supports & so on

The 2015 Register has it listed twice as 2M3138 an 2M0490

Take yer pick - my two pennorth is on 0490

Sam your pic is listed as 2M3738 - way beyond the top known chassis number.
The car in your pic has Morris eight wheel hubs, later side vallance & ? semaphores - so certainly not the same body as on Jims pic.

Sack cloth and ashes dept here!

I misread my handwritten note - the chassis number is shown in the Register as 2M3138.

The caption on the b & w photo posted by Sam is wrong in that it also shows chassis 2M3738, this photo is on the file for 2M3138.

Thanks Tony.

I cannot recall where the black and white picture came from but it was identified as GG 4819. I added the chassis number bottom left only on the basis George's typographical error.

The car in the black and white photograph certainly looks completely in keeping with chassis number 2M 3138 first registered 17/9/31 but the blue car is not what it appears to be... 2M0490 sounds right.

Here is the revised black and white picture.

If it is definite that it belonged to T. H. Swallow, then it must be 2M0490.
It also looks a very early Oxford car with originally rod brakes, with the holes in the valences!
However, the registration number of 2M0490 was said to be JR 3717, but it was blue with blue wheels!
GG is Glasgow, ad so may be traceable at Droitwich Spa.
The plot thickens!!

My late husband bought GG4819 in 1961. He spent many hours getting it roadworthy and friends who were expert coach painters repainted it for him. I have photos but can't see how to attach them at the moment. Found the answer in FAQ. Photos attached in next post.

Thanks Colin,
I loved this car and have searched for it over the years since my husband died. I wrote to the MG Owners Club once and was told about its having been welded to the roof of a garage in Middlesbrough. Their reply also said that it was known to them but gave no details of who might have owned it at the time. I have no idea where my husband bought it or to whom he sold it. I remember someone coming to pick it up and that I cried as I watched it being driven away. He bought it for £25 and sold it I think, for either £50 or £75. He was applying for a job which required him to have a reliable car. He didn't get the job!

Hi again Colin,
In the 1970s or 80s my husband was sure he saw the car, painted British Racing Green being driven northwards on the A1 near the junction with the A63, the Boot & Shoe junction. He was on a bike at the time so couldn't follow it but he must have seen the number plate or he wouldn't have been sure that it was the same car. Does anyone know when or for how long it was welded to the garage roof? I saw in an earlier post that it was built in 1929. My husband was told it was built in 1931. It still had its original engine when he had it. Unfortunately he didn't take a note of any details regarding chassis number etc. Does anyone know who owns it now?
