Hi all - I got this picture in 1997 or so along with one of my 3 litre bentley at the same venue. Believe this is Naish Hill (sp?) in period. Looks like an MG to me, what say you?

Although as far as I can remember, I have never seen photographs of cars on Naish hill, this particular photograph fits what I do know of it. It was narrow curving and steep and had one or two banked corners part of which were grass surfaced. The hill was sited a few miles south of Bristol, not far from Portishead and was destroyed when the M5 Motorway cut through it.
I tried to find it at the time but failed miserably due to too many enormous earth moving vehicles getting in the way. However, I was able to borrow (on long term, you understand) a few nice chunks of Tickenham Hill stone for the natural stone fireplace that I was building.

There is a film on the history of British Hillclimbing. The first speed event in the UK after WW2 was held at Naish & there is a very short clip of (I think) this car on one of the grass sections. I'll try & did it out (& the VHS player!).

Indeed it is. Ex Maurice Toulmin, ex C A N May, ex Steve Dear, ex Ian Williamson etc. etc. Apologies to all the other famous drivers who I haven't mentioned.
I have now come across another picture of Naish hill. I will try and find time to scan it later in the day.

Here's another photograph of Naish Hill (courtesy of Pete Stowe - Bristol Area Motor Sports expert). The picture is dated 1947 and whilst it is taken from the same position as the one shown at the start of this thread, the hill looks much narrower and the grass banking is steeper. No idea what the car is.

There's a DVD of Bristol Motor Sport, which includes some amateur footage of Naish - as well as lots of other events in the area. I have the same thing on videotape somewhere and IIRC it shows the club members actually laying the concrete! This page has details and a short preview - which I think is actually pre-WW2 footage of Naish.

JB 7521 - a little more to add to this thread. The chassis file service records show that Mr W Chandler of 77 Alms Road Clifton Bristol owned Cracker in August 1947. Having contacted Allen Harris and Pete Stowe of the Bristol MC and LCC, they confirm that Mr Chandler was a member of Bristol MC and had entered Naish Hill Climb on 18 June 1949 driving an MG. By July 1949, Cracker had found a new owner being a Mr Brian Arthur Howard Botting, who also lived in the Bristol area. Read into that what you will, but please enjoy the small snippet of history for JB 7521 which has kindly been sent to us.

Wow! Great movie, and such fun! Shirt sleeves and a flat cap, or even a trilby, pipe optional. Why not leave the door open for extra cooling, and use the grass bank to go round faster! Brilliant!
