I have a spare J engine which I know has been with the car since about 1938 and was told it might have been from a J1 bought by the then owner as a spare and never used. It does have rather a curious number and wondered how that ties in with known practice? It is: 103J45 on top row, BR2 below. Any ideas? Simon C. |

My engine is 1504J BR2, a replacement from another car, and rebored at the factory to which I think BR2 refers. The top face of the block had been annotated against each cylinder with B and the A had been crossed out.
Thus yours would seem to be an early engine, No 103, So what about the 45, I wonder...

Engines starting with 103J followed by a two digit number would seem to be factory replacement engines fitted in the period October to December 1933. Some of these also had BR1 after the number and others had BS or CS. There appears to have been eight 103J engines supplied in that period.

Thanks, that's interesting but, Simon, if there were only 8 103J engines why the 45 suffix I wonder? Not that it really matters I suppose! Simon C. |
