Greg,
I don't think this is as much a clip as it is a very fine spring. You should be able to fashion one by winding some fine music wire around the shaft. Say hi to your dad.

Greg, The clip shown on the first picture I have use successfully on a number of starters. I bought them from the Austin 7 club in the UK. Unfortunately I have failed to come up with any more contact information. One thing to consider in relation to the tinkling problem is the resting clearance between the pinion and ring gear. There is a Lucas service note covering this and other aspects of starters but from memory the clearance is very small, 3/32" if I remember correctly but it would be best to confirm this first.

Sorry, I didn't spot the "clip" the first time. Clever!

The clip you want I think is part number AE0333 from www.theaustinsevenworkshop.com they were £3 each. It has a centre hole of 5/8" diameter. It matches the picture in the Peter Green link above. Ted. |

I most appreciate the reponses to Greg's post. In 45 years of rebuilding MMM engines, I have never encountered the Bendix gear clip mentioned. The issue of the pinon to ring gear distance is covered in the Lucas Technical Service Correspondence Course, pages 25-26 found here: https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/pdf/lucascourse2.pdf Many Thanks to all who have contributed to Greg's inquiry. Installed clip obtained from theaustinsevenworkshop.com noted above. We now have dozens of engine starts and 1,000 miles with the starter pinion retention clip. Works great - no more tingling noise heard! Thank you. Thanks, Greg
