Readers of the Bulletin may be aware that over the last twelve months I and one or two other members have been looking into the possibility of getting new gears made for the Wolseley four-speed crash gearbox. These would be the ratios used on the Magna L, J 1 & 2 and the PB / NB. The PA gearbox can be upgraded to take these ratios although new gear selectors and selector rails are needed.

We are now at the stage where we have a supplier, Neve Engineering, and enough demand for a batch of at least ten gear sets to be made. The prices for a complete set of gears with mainshaft, first-motion shaft and lay-shaft are:

- £2,995.20 (inc. VAT but excluding bearings) for the Magna L, J1/2 and PB.
- £3577,20 (inc. VAT and gear selectors and rails but excluding bearings) for the PA to PB conversion.

This is not a commercial venture for me. Those who want to buy will place their orders directly with Neve Engineering. In the first instance, however, if anyone who has not already been in touch is interested please contact me for further information at peter.parry@cerbera.org

I will do my best to answer any questions.

Well done Peter

A worthy initiative. I have some Neve-made gears in my PA supplied and installed by S&V back in 2007. The near-PB ratios are a huge improvement!

What a super project.

I am not too sure about the NBs having PB ratios? My old NA0960 was complete and original when I bought it and the gear ratios were PA. Of course the PA box could have been a replacement....?

I rebuilt the car and fitted a PB gearbox which I also rebuilt.

Many thanks Dick. The project is progressing well and we now have firm commitments for 16 sets of gears.

I do just need to flag one thing. You mention your own gears which are the close-ratio ones. However, I must reaffirm to everyone that we are not getting CR gears made. We are getting standard Magna L, J2 and PB gears made. This is a sensitive issue because S&V owns the tooling for the CR gears. Neve, S&V and I are all fully agreed on this!

Thanks Peter

All noted. The J2 etc ratios would certainly be a vast improvement on the standard PA cogs however they may be sourced!
