My Brother passed this photo in "The Observer" on to me;

The caption is "West Sussex traffic officers at Police Headquarters in Chichester, about 1939".

These I presume are K1s or KNs and I'm rather intrigued by the JB plates on Sussex cars. Could they have been on loan to the force for evaluation? Their colour schemes don't look very "police like" for the 1930s! Also, do they look a little tired? The two right hand cars appear to be missing the "MG" flap over their starting handle fairings.

The Js below are on Sussex plates, PX for the P Type is I'm pretty certain Sussex;

Hope they're all of interest.

Dave

Hello Dave

I included this picture in the Triple-M column of Safety Fast in the October 2011 edition.The accompanying text said:

"A 1930S PICTURE AND A NEW BOOK
Peter Mace kindly sent me the following picture which he spotted in a recent edition of the Chichester Observer. It shows a line-up of police cars photographed between 1935-9 outside Chichester police station. Six M.G.s from the West Sussex Police Constabulary are featured, including BPX 45, a very late PB, which is nowadays listed as in the ownership of J.E. Cushman in the U.S.A. Alas the other cars – a pair of PBs (PO 7232 and 7233) and three K1s (JB856, 1272 and 2751), are no longer recorded on the Register, but if anyone knows to the contrary, do please get in touch.

"This may be a relevant moment to let you know that a revised and updated 140-page soft-bound edition of Andrea Green’s noted book ‘M.G.s on Patrol - The M.G. Police Cars and the Men and Women Who Used Them’ is now available from the Register Library and the Main Club Office at the very reasonable price of £14.99. It will also be available in the U.K. and in the U.S.A. via Amazon and from other booksellers."

Best wishes
Dick

Dick, It is with some trepidation that I say that PO 7232 and PO 7233 look like J2's to me rather than P-types?

Incidentally I meant to add that a friend of mine of many years ago (in a former life), had been a constable in a county police force and went to Oxford (not Abingdon) to take delivery of several new MGA coupes which they then used on patrol work. They were generally "feted" and given afternoon tea!

Hello Barry,

I think you may well be right! I'll ask our esteemed Registrar to say whether he has any record at all about these two cars - both of which have 'gone before'.

Happy New Year to all!

Dick

Sack cloth & ashes Dick! One of the afflictions of advancing years is, if I remember correctly, short term memory loss. Will have to make a WRITTEN note to do better.

Still, looking at the size of the S.F. rendering I doubt anyone could have told a J from a P! Or indeed a K.

The stranger in the middle is a Talbot saloon, probably a 10, the forerunner of my first car, a 1946 Sunbeam Talbot 10HP Tourer.

Better sign off while I remember my name!

Hello Dave,

Me too!

You are quite right about the exposure we are able to obtain for Triple-M ery in the routine monthly Safety Fast slots. The allocation is 390 words and 1 picture! Mind you, for our thrice-yearly spreads such as Oct 2011 we get 3,000 words and 6 pics!

That's another way of me saying : "Folks if you have any material you'd like to see in Safety Fast - just send it through and I'll try to persuade Kimber House to find space for it"

Best wishes
Dick

As usual Brian, this forum continues to produce fascinating insights into Triple M history. The note that JB 856 was privately owned by November '37 scotches the Local Paper's "about 1939" date for the photo, a date which seemingly came from the Police's own collection. Also confirmed my suspicion once Peter Lansdown had mentioned his Father's ex demo JB 854 in the thread on RX 5971.
