DVLA says it is 1172cc which means that it most likely has a Ford engine. A good suggestion as an alternative though.

I've been under the bonnet and I don't think it's a Ford engine...

Looks like the DVLA is out of date!

Looks like a Triumph/Standard engine. Spitfire? MG Exhaust manifold so Midget 1500?

I'm pretty sure it's a TA MPJG engine or equivalent Wolseley.

As I say, I'm told it's an MG VA engine or equivalent.. Comparisons with images of a VA engine on the web would seem to support that..

I'm not familiar with a VA engine, but the water inlet and outlet to the head are the same as a TA. But 1172cc is no where near the capacity of a VA at 1549cc. But it also isn't the same as a TA at 1292.

UMEDM there seems to be no exhaust system attached to the manifold...

Probably a bit noisy.

What about a Morris 10 at 1140cc and should look a bit like a TA Engine.
Just a thought.

I don't mean to prolong this diversion from the original question, but Hugh, compare the water outlet from the front of the head to that in the subject car. Notice that the thermostat housings are very different. The VA has the thermostat housing coming vertically directly off the head. The TA engine has it coming off to the side from the body of the water pump.

Well, this is what a TA engine looks like. Clearly very similar...

But like you say, this is becoming a distraction from the original post....
