... just look at the state of the tyres on Lewis Hamilton's car as he wins the Turkish Grand Prix by 30 seconds after starting from sixth on the grid. Awesome!

He clearly found some dry bits to speed him on and wear out his wet tyres.

It was a pretty awesome performance, especially as he lapped his team mate who struggled to keep his car going in the right direction!

Don't forget Canadian Lance Stroll won pole position in the wet and led a good part of the race racing in he wet.

They are a bit different from the original Cinturatos which I never thought were much good in the wet.

A lot better Terry than the crossply Dunlop RS5s that were original equipment on Twin Cams.

When I got my first MG, a TD, it came with two almost new Cinturatos on the front and two rather elderly cross plies of indeterminate provenance on the back. No wonder that I ended up in the ditch, upside down, on a wet twisty road. At least that’s my excuse!

I agree the Vanwall was in my opinion the most beautiful F1 car ever made. I use to work in The Aldwych and each morning I walked down Kingsway, where, I think it was GKN had offices and there was a Vanwall in their window, I use to dribble as I passed.

Each in their own way these are surely contenders

But I think I'd have to give it to Mercedes for their stunning W196

I agree with you Kevin, but I still think the Vanwall is my favourite (danned predictive spelling keeps wanting that to be Vandal) closely followed by the Lotus 16.
Back to the tyres, in the sixties if your tyres didn't show any canvas, they were good and my heart has a flutter when I ponder how many miles I have driven on tyres far worst than Hamilton's, but I suppose I wasn't doing up to 200mph but up to probably 60 or even 70 at a push.

Dan Gurney's Eagles, almost any 1960's-70's Lotus, Ferrari Sharknose. To me the F1 golden era. The cars were similar but distinctive, shaped by men's minds and hands, not computers, and they made a delightful racket.

Maybe off target, but when I acquired my PA in 1972, for well-worn tyres it had two Pirelli, one Victory, one Blue Peter, and one India. A window into the 60s and the variety of available tyres?

I see that six 'replica' Vanwalls (or fakes as D.S.J. would have called them) are to be built - https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/19/vanwall-f1-grand-prix-race-car-continuation-replica/

In my opinion one of the greatest is the 250F Maserati, I recall reading Sir Stirling Moss saying it was his favourite F1 car.
