I see that this L1 special is coming up for auction at Bonham's MPH next month. Anyone know anything of its history?

Hello Jonathan

First of all we come to the Triple-M Register.

This car is L0432 which has been known to the Register since 1962. The car was campaigned in hill climbs etc by David Taylor but has not been used for a long time due to engine problems. I have not seen the car but understand it has some K parts including the 13 inch brakes.

The car started life as a standard 4 seat tourer.

Thanks for the quick reply, George. I suspect the engine problems have yet to be sorted, hence the low estimate by Bonhams. Smart looking car, though. Always liked the six cylinder jobs.

Hello Johnathan.
I remember this car very well from the time I was stationed in Thorne, South Yorkshire in and around 1975/77.
It was owned by David Taylor who periodically came over to see me in this car. he was a very friendly and helpful fellow. I was building my first KN/ K3 replica at the time and David let me drive his car as it was fitted with K type preselector gearbox and K type brakes and he thought it would give me a taste of K type motoring! I remember it was a very fast car and was very attractive.
The last I heard the car had been in a dismantled state for many years.

From the photos I have seen the car has a standard crash gearbox.

Thanks Chris...it seems to have left quite an impression on you. And it seems to have been put back together again, (there's a You Tube video made in preparation for the sale) and the engine is back in there. I’ve asked Bonhams how much recommissioning is likely to be needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMxL_Li2lb8

Thanks, Jonathan.

George, the preselector may have been replaced. It was certainly in the car when I knew it.

Regards,

Chris

it was taken off the road with a broken crankshaft and David was going to make his own so I would be surprised if it has been replaced

I too remember this car from the mid-seventies when David would enter it in our NE Centre autotests. It was very quick and David was a skilled driver. I'm sure it had a preselector box then; do I remember it winning the Register Car of the Year some time?

I have also read the crankshaft was broken - an engine rebuild could be very expensive.

Terry

There's a preselector box in the same auction so could be the one David had in the car in the 70's?
