Yes, the dialling code is equivalent to the area code, more or less. If you look at some of the other advertisements you'll see that the phone numbers are prefaced by the name of the town. You then had to look up the town in the telephone directory - remember those? - to get the dialling code. It wasn’t that Ted deliberately left it out - it was a mistake on the part of Motor Sport but they were able to give me the city name - Leeds - straightaway.
