My apologies in advance for what might be seen as an 'off-topic' enquiry.
As some of you may know, I am Archivist for the Austin 7 Clubs' Association and we have recently been donated a trophy marked 'The Austin Trophy Welsh Motor Rally'. I am keen to find out as much as I can about the award, hoping that I might even find out who it may have been awarded to. I know that there are some historians of such events that frequent the forum and wondereed whether anyone might be able to help?

Hopefully the photo is now positioned correctly.
What a lovely trophy. No doubt our trials experts Colin Butchers and Mike Dalby will be able to supply some history.
In the late 1950s I found a very original Austin 7 top hat saloon in a quarry just outside Basingstoke. I was unable to find an owner.

I have seen your enquiry Hugh but as yet have not had a chance to look into it. Might be a few days before I can. Am off to Pre-War Prescott on Friday and the PA needs a bit of preparation. So once again, Austin will have to give way to M.G. ! Will write again a.s.a.p.

No mention at all in other newspapers or years, sorry.

Thank you Cat!! A great bit of sleuthing!! From, that, a pal who has a subscription to a newspaper archive site came up with the final piece in the jigsaw. I've struggled to edit the full page down to the relevant portion, but if you can see the centre under 'Coventry and District' there is a short pararagraph that says Mr Gunnar Poppe, driving a Talbot 105, won the Sir Herbert Austin Trophy in the unlimited open class in the Welsh Rally that has just concluded in Cardiff
Then the final proof was the Western Mail which if you look closely, you can see Gunnar Poppe holding the trophy, middle to the left
For those of you who don't know, Poppe was a successful works driver for Austin
Thanks once again for all the help. I am still after one last point, Can anyone identify where he started from, the Rally had a number fo start points around the UK..

Hugh - Gunnar Poppe was entry no.21 and he started from The Ace of Spades Garage on the Great West Road in Hounslow. A fellow London starter was Sybil Edmundson in a 1933 McEvoy Morris Minor whose original entry and route card details are held in the archive here. Full details and results can be found in the July 19th and 26th 1935 editions of The Autocar
