A very nice matching numbers J1 is on eBay. Needs a sympathetic rebuild but looks better than good value at £11,500.

I notice the same pictures appear on eBay as on the register. Has the car only just appeared on the register?

This is an exceptional car and, as Ian comments, it really needs a sympathetic restoration.

Mike Hawke's 75 Years of M.G. indicates the registration number CG 4134.

I hope the new owner resists the impulse to pull it to pieces without fully recording every detail. I would love to be able to visit this car and have the opportunity to photograph everything as it is now.

The steering column and the repainted wheels show some work has already been carried done. Are those real or dummy 12" brake drums?

Sam,

It has Register number 584 so awareness of it dates back to the mid 60s I’d say. The brakes look to be proper 12” ones.

Thanks Simon, I see the drum properly now.

My reason for asking if the details have only just appeared is that fairly recently I took up the offer to 'Browse the Register' and compiled a list of J1's in the UK which have not turned into J2's etc and did not spot this one.

Although the car was listed we did not have any pictures before the car was advertised. The Register number 584 will have been allocated in 1966/7.

I hope the car will be restored as an original J1.

George

My number is 843 in mid 1967, so I would plump for 1966

Looking up the name 'Ian Coxen' I found this in the archive -

https://www.triple-mregister.org/forums//topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=4123&whichpage=2&SearchTerms=Ian+Coxen+

"Not forgetting Ian Coxen J2 in Class 2b....
A return to speed events for Ian after quite a few years.
There's a new competitive spirit flowing in the local VSCC natter here in Cornwall!

Ian's ultralight J2 was a fast car in it's day.
Great to see him fired up again."

Is the "J2" the same J1?

No, this is not Ian's lightweight "J2" (possibly also a J1 chassis?). This car was purchased in 1964 by Mr R Overnell, who registered the car with us, it subsequently went to ground in the 80s, pretty much a sleeper, but not "frozen in time" as some work has obviously gone on over the years. It would be nice to see a sympathetic restoration though - if only I had a wad of cash in my back pocket#128578;

If it were 8-10 years from now and I had the time, money and a home garage I would take this on and try and get my 2 sons involved. They are currently 17 and 12 and have zero interest haha. Eldest does have a trials motorbike and keen to learn how to drive so there is hope.
Out of interest, if this was restored to a good running but not perfect standard. How much would it be worth? Ball park figure?

Peter Frost,
You mention IA Shute as a former owner of this car. This could be John Shute as he owned more then 30 MG,s. I bought my L1 Continental Coupe from his widow.
