XJ 4139 is J2504. It apparently had a racing and sprint history pre war and had a Laystall crank fitted. But seemingly nowt known of it since. JN 4719 is PA0699 - nowt known of it either.

Whereas, the Austin 7 is an Arrow 4 seater and is alive and well...

Apologies, my mistake, the car is actually an AEW 4 seat tourer. A rare car that is suggested only 8 were ever made. For many years, it belonged to the father of a pal of mine, but now resides in Japan.
David, might it be possible to negotiate a high resolution scan of the photo for the current owner, please? 300dpi TIFF would be the favoured scan quality, to give the best detail for making a print..
Many thanks
Hugh

Regarding scan quality, you really need to think in terms of output size when deciding on the scan resolution with the aim of 300 dpi for the print. So scanning a 3 x 2 Box Brownie print at 300 dpi will not produce a good 10 x 8 print as it will only have a resolution of 900 x 600. When scanning my old Brownie prints, I did so at 1200 dpi TIFF giving a resolution of 3600 x 2400 and they print at 10 x 8 at a very acceptable quality.
I recall that when the Register was scanning all the factory photos it held, this was done at 300 dpi which probably accounts for the poor quality of prints that were available from the online printing. .

Thank you Simon. 300dpi is the standard I have used for everything in the Austin 7 Arhive but have not found any shortcomings in that standard...

Hugh, I suppose it depends on what the scan is to be used for. For online view, 300 dpi would probably be fine and you certainly dont want a 20MB hi-res file, but for printing to a larger size, you need all the resolution you can get. Plus, a hi-res scan can pick up details in a musty print that would be invisible to the naked eye. Scanning resolution is a bit like garlic - too much resolution is never enough.

I think that there are a number of views on your approach, Simon - particularly when you are working with an old, slightly out of focus Black and White print. But this is hardly the forum in which to debate that. I'm happy to stick at 300dpi for all the work I do.. YMMV....
cheers
Hugh
