Has anyone personal experience of Armoto in Chesterfield for dynamo rewinds? The website sounds promising but they only seem to communicate by e mail late at night, can't get a phone response so far. I am cautious about posting off my Rotax for converting to 2 brush and overhauling, if I can't speak to them. Our local Yeovil firm carwood has their dynamo expert on six weeks sick leave , 12 weeks ago !

Not a direct reply but... If you talk to Charles Jones in Shaftesbury he has got a guy local to him that does rewinds.

Tim

Hello, Simon.
I have used Armoto but for a magneto repair. They did this quite quickly and proficiently.

Hi Tim, thanks, but unfortunately he is the chap in Yeovil on extended sick leave. No one else in the depot does dynamos. Simon

Hi Simon,
Armoto rebuilt a Rotax armature for me around a new shaft a few years ago. They seemed easy to work with and did just what I asked for at reasonable cost. They advertise frequently in the classic press so one can assume they have the appropriate experience.

I've used Armoto did a good job but by christ they were expensive especially as it was for an ML CK1 magneto for my 1927 Sunbeam Model 9 493cc single cylinder Flat Tanker I asked them over the phone to quote me for "Worse case scenario a full rebuild" I was told about £300 to be fair I did have a bit of work done on the Adv / Ret mechanism anyway imagine my amazement when the bill came in at £500 so almost 50% more....I paid it anyway as they did a good job and it works great....I'd be having to think about using them for anything more than a single spark magneto I mean how much would it be to do a 6 or an 8 Scintila mag.....you might have to sell a kidney or 2......LOL

I think there is a key difference between expensive and something that "costs a lot."

Russ, it sounds to me as if your job was in the cost a lot category as it was a complex almost "one off" exercise.

Things that are expensive tend to be plainly over priced for the work carried out or are perhaps a fashionable brand trading on reputation only.

Perhaps your job could have been described as expensive if they hadn't done a good job and it didn't work well.

P.S. One always has to be mindful of not getting caught out by VAT; It's easy to forget that some may quote net of VAT.

Costly Expensive call it what you like but when you ask for a worse case scenario quote and then the final bill comes in almost 50% dearer it does make one baulk would I use them again I'd have to think hard about that.....just as an aside I put n acoustic guitar in to have some work which included a couple of cheapish new machine heads and restringing the word on cost was about £50 and 4 days 3 weeks later I popped into the shop and it seems they're waiting for 6 new machine heads so their £50 cost and time has already gone out the window.....being in business myself I've quoted many projects on a price and I've never given anyone a final bill for anything other than what I quoted let alone 50% more than quoted

The 1934 Cadillac generator was just shy of 5K with only an hour and a half a shop labor time at $100hr, plus the case had already been re-plated. Friends just finished a 40K radiator (that would be roughly 53k pounds) for their Alfa Romeo. Probably all is relative when the quality of workmanship is obviously present.

Russ,

You did give the impression that you had more work done than that included in the estimate.

I don't imagine that when you quoted for something in your business and additional work became necessary, that you did it for nothing?

Quality work costs.

If the “40k” is US dollars, that would be equivalent to GBP30k, not 53k!

I advised them of that and I included it when I asked for the worse case scenario verbal quote I wasn't expecting them to do that for nothing...anyway leave it at that will you you're obviously seeking confrontation and I got better things to do cheers

Thanks Simon - I always forget it is a subtract verses an add - now makes it seem so much more affordable :)
