Today's Times(p15) quote:
"Never judge a book by its cover. Owners of classic Morris and MG motors are within the top ten of the highest drink and drug driving convictions, whereas flashier makes (sic) come in far lower on the list."
At the top of the list was … Morris Minor drivers.
So, who is having all the fun and not telling?

Strikes me as suspect reporting.

| Can the Thunderer be wrong, saw a clip somewhere the other day of an old moggy 1000 giving a Police car the slip! I had one years ago and my wife reused to drive it, suspension issues...or lack of, it did roll a bit in the bends. Compared to the Midget she had been driving it was a slightly different experience, in the end we opted for a MGB GT with child seats in the back. |

We had a 1964 Moggy - the big-engined 1098cc model. Took it on honeymoon in 1970 and on reversing up the slope at Portloe harbour the rear springs informed us that their anchorage points would be much happier if they could join us inside the car, rather than in their proper place. I am sure we were sober - at least for some of the time!

At the time of our many honeymoons, we owned a Rover P4 1959 which had a large rear bench seat and a retractable arm rest, the rear door pull straps were a great accessory at times. Not so flexible these days !

If I read the article right, MG may be in the top ten, but not in the top 4. If Minors were in 4th place with 4 per thousand, I would speculate that MG was three or less although the article is not clear as to whether the 4 in a thousand was the average for all cars or for the Morris. In any event, that is not a terrible statistic.

According to howmanyleft.co.uk there are just 45 Panthers still registered in the UK. Which I reckon means that only a fraction of one driver has a drink-drive conviction!
