I was told of a preparation to seal porous aluminium sumps. I can't remember what it was called or who made it. Does anyone know what is called, if it works, or even if such a product is available.
I would not want to use epoxy or any other substance to seal a used sump unless I could be 100% sure that every minute trace of old oil deposits in the pores of the metal had been cleaned away. This is not easy to achieve. The advantage of using Ultraseal or a similar company is that they have specialised equipment for thoroughly cleaning the casting before it is sealed. They are not expensive and their process works so why take a risk?
You may be interested to know that I also use Ultraseal in Slough to have our P type sump castings sealed there.
It should normally cost around £10 per sump for double impregnation but I recall there is a minimum charge. If you wish to enquire with them and find this is the case then as I have a bulk order there with them over Christmas, I could have yours added to my order if it helps you save some cash. You would need to get it down to them though. Let me know if you need my help anyway
If you have any holes which are larger than porosity seepage then the process will not seal it
