From ' The Advertiser and Gazette ' Friday April 12th 1935 Page 13.

Friend's Evidence : Wilfred L. Jackson , 291, Kenton-road , Kenton, said ' He was at the dance at Ruislip and left in his car at the same time as Mr. Cottingham. Witness went in front and Mr. Cottingham followed between 20 and 50 yards behind.Witness kept looking back to see if Mr. Cottingham was following and at Field End Road, witness heard a crackling noise of the exhaust of Mr. Cottingham's car. Witness turned round and went back and saw Mr. Cottingham's car overturned in the ditch. At this point a badly damaged wheel from Mr. Jacksons car was produced and in reply to the coroner, witness said his car did strike one of the stones, shown on the photograph at the side of the road. He drove to Harrow Police Station. The tyre came off, but he drove without it. He could not account for the accident. Witness said he believed Mr. Cottingham must have run into the post that was broken, as the post was between the road and the ditch, but he had not the slightest idea how the car got into the ditch. They left the Orchard Hotel at approximately 2.15 am and the accident occurred about ten minutes later. although it was not raining at the time, the road was very wet, but was not particularly slippery. Acting Inspector Malcolm, of the Public Carriage Dept. New Scotland Yard, described the damaged wheel of Mr. Jackson to the jury.He said the tyre was punctured in three places as though the car had struck three of the stones.Mr. Jackson recalled, said he did not touch three of the stones - only one.Acting Inspector Malcolm said there were no signs on Mr. Cottingham's car of it having struck any of the stones. Police witness said, with the aid of photographs, explained a theory to the jury that Mr. Jackson's car, after striking one of the stones, swerved to the offside and Mr. Cottingham, who might have been close behind then tried to get through on the nearside. He added that the tracks of the tyres could be seen for about 1 1/2 miles. Jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death.
