I can report that the dismantled J2 I bought in Cyprus is now on its way back to Blighty. It took thirteen packing boxes, the chassis was packed by me with cardboard and bubble wrap, leaving just both end cross tubes lightly wrapped for ease of lifting & handling. I was informed that the delivery eta would be about six weeks. The £2500+ new spares that came with the car ( from S & V motors )are coming back in their original delivery box. The shipping cost was 770 euros, no VAT was payable and was organised by a Greek Cypriot shipping company, they were extremely helpful and efficient.
Should arrive just in time for Christmas !!

Chris,
I think you ought to save your praise until everything arrives safely in East Sussex. For all you know, your precious metalwork might be on its way at this very moment, to the metal recovery specialists in Bangladesh.
For your sake, I hope not.

I am very positive that the J2 will arrive in the UK, the car was packed in the container along with many other items heading for the UK, mostly furniture from ex pats returning home.

Nice to see you have an early "flat fronted" petrol tank, appropriate for your chassis, and as far as I know, not presently available as a new spare. Best wishes for the rebuild.

I can just imagine what the two guys are saying that are lifting the large case (in English.)
I have moved my PB kit of bits 3 times in England and I know what a hassle that was, even with the body and chassis on wheels.
Keep the photo's coming.

You were right ! I know enough Greek to understand their ' comments '. Luckily the chassis came with very appropriate handles in the end cross tubes which made the lifting relatively easy. The first item to pack was the engine block and the rear axle/ differential, next the cylinder head, working down to the smaller items, all were packed in bubble wrap and/or cardboard and carefully positioned to act as padding for the more delicate items. The four aluminium trunks were bought by my friend at a local auction for 40 euros and proved extremely useful, having handles and padlock eyes. A local garage gave me a couple of modern car rear axle boxes used for delivery and the shipping company gave me the rest ( no extra charge ). All in all a great experience...but would'nt wish to repeat the exercise as many times as you. More photos to follow.

More Photos from Cyprus. This is Michael Bird who imported ' Poppet ' into Cyprus, he had already started on her restoration when he had a stroke and sadly passed on. I have permission to repeat Michaels photo. He was apparently a super engineer, sadly we never met as I am sure that we would have spent many a ' spanner ' moment together.

More photos in detail. The chassis dismantled ready for packing, I secured the fitted handbrake with wooden slats, the rear axle removed and packed seperately, I secured the springs and left on the chassis. The last picture of the consignment just prior to collection.

Hi Chris,
Sometime after you get all the pieces unpacked I would be interested in seeing detailed photos of your flat front (I've been calling it flat back)petrol tank if you would be so kind. My car, J2 3118, came with one but I'm not sure it is/was original to the car.
Brian,
Rich Hardy had a few flat front/back tanks made a couple years ago I believe. I was right after I was having mine restored and I decided to stop on this path after the cost reached a point where I couldn't justify the estimated cost of finishing it.
I'll stop the story at this point as I don't want to steal Chris's thread. It would probably be best to start a new subject on petrol tanks in the future..

Hi ,Steve Gilbert makes the flat back tanks,i bought one a short while ago for my replica F2 i'm building. I think Barry Foster was the one who had them started being made by Steve as he needed a new one for a car he had a tank problem and he had a pattern with,Oliver |

Oliver is right.....the one I had was like a lace curtain so Steve was able to see inside without taking it to pieces! There are several types of flat back tanks. The end panels vary from plain ends to ones with swaged ends..... Foz |

As soon as the tank arrives I will make precise measurements and take photos.
