In the picture of Bader in the T type, is it my imagination or are the tips of the front wings painted white which many people did because of the blackout ?
The picture is either still during the war ( when was he released from German captivity ?) or, if after the war which is more likely, why the paint remaining ?
Just a thought !

Presumably it was taken before he was captured which was in 1941.

Hello, Simon.
Good point and you may well be correct but I always thought that Douglas Bader still had his J2 at the time of his capture.More research required !

If you search for Douglas Bader MG on google, you will find a getty image of the same scene from a different angle. The caption says it was taken after his release in 1945.

Yes Barny, I agree, it looks like some sort of winged critter.
In the film his labrador has a very non PC name, but the one in this pic does not look like that name would fit (wrong colour),

Hello, Forum.
Frustratingly, I am trying to post a picture of Sir Douglas with his J2 but something is stopping me. After I have added the picture to the file and try to close the window it won’t ! Anyone any suggestions ?
Thank you,
Chris |

Can’t help with posting the photo, Chris, but it would seem that his J2 was J2296, registration number EW 7544, which is not known to have survived as it isn’t listed in the current printed Register.

Chris and Forum:
Have you seen this post? Concerning attachment of photos. Might help. http://www.triple-mregister.org/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15565
On the dog issue black dog with non PC name was a Black Labrador; dog in car was Golden Retriever. Both breeds much owned and loved. All the best.

Thanks, John and Simon, I will try again later.
Graham, I think you may be confusing Sir Douglas Bader with Guy Gibson who was the Commander on the Dam Busters Raid. Guy Gibson’s dog was a black Labrador and was killed in a road accident whilst he was on the raid. As you say the dog had a name which apparently we are now not permitted to use.

I think there is confusion here between Bader and Wing Cmdr Guy Gibson (of the Dam Busters). It was the latter whose dog had the non-PC name.
Edit: Westbury posted while I was typing!

I once knew a chap who was Guy Gibson's nephew and he told me Guy Gibson certainly had a dog with a non PC name. I also had a friend who had a 'dark' brown labrador who wanted to call it by that same name, we advised against it, so it became Morgan. Just as non PC on this forum really!!
