On a visit to RAF Hendon yesterday I noticed a large black & white photo of the cars and crowd at an airshow, not date or location but I guess pre war Hendon. Looks like a couple of J2's plus CG7713 not on DVLA possibly a Magna ? F1347 which I am custodian for is CG2101. David F0708/F1347

With that many cars jammed in, are they home yet?

The inscription on the hangar, which reads 'home of the City of London (B) Squadron Auxiliary Air Force' would seem to confirm that it's Hendon, early 1930s; the (B) signifies 'bomber' and the squadron didn't convert to fighters until it was equipped with the Hawker Demon in 1937. That squadron is better known as 601 - AKA the Millionaires' Squadron - so it of course has a connection to MGs via at least one of its later members - Whitney Straight. 601 was based at Hendon from 1927 until September 2nd 1939, when it was re-deployed to Biggin Hill.

Well built saloon cars in those days - with all those people standing on the roofs of cars.
Anybody tried that with a modern MG ZS ?? |

I would hazard a guess that it is a Wolseley nine tourer . Possibly singer nine but they tended to have a rounded top screen , the bonnet curvature suggests Wolseley . |

That photo was brought to my attention about 10 years ago by a chap at Silverstone. Daughter No1 was living in Hendon at the time, so went down to see it. The photo itself is in the RAF on-line photo archive & is if I remember right the 1936 Empire Air Show at Hendon. It's the only pre-war photo of the J2 I have.

I have been trying to find out the history on MG1490 F0708 since I became the custodian of it in 2005, one of the early owners was a gentlemen named EE Vielle who amazingly was still alive at 103,he has since passed away. I found his name through the chassis file and a letter he had written to MG complaining of vertical drive oil leaks. He only kept the car for a very short time. His daughter has after a lengthy search of photographs found a picture of the car circa 1935. Not the best of pictures but after a lot of searching and not finding anything I am so pleased to now have a little bit more of the history jigsaw. David F0708/F1347
