As many of you will know, last weekend was the Members’ Meeting at Goodwood and this year there was a race dedicated to Earl Howe and featured many of the cars associated with and raced by Earl Howe himself. Quite rightly, the MG K3 featured on the grid with the Earl Howe Mille Miglia K3001 and the ex-Dick Seaman K3011.
3001 was being driven by Louis Frankel and 3011 by Andrew Taylor.
Qualifying on the Saturday was dry and warm and a fantastic drive from Louis saw 3001 on the second row of the grid in 4th place. Andrew had a steady qualifying putting 3011 in 14th place.
Come race day on Sunday the temperature had dropped several degrees and the wind speed increased many MPH… but at least it was dry. As the union flag dropped it was Andrew who made a great start and had climbed 5 places by the first corner. Louis unfortunately had a different first 100 metres. It appeared that he had gearbox issues and was unable to initially select a gear. After a slow get away he eventually found a useable gear but unfortunately made it no further than the first corner and had to retire.
The race developed into a series of races within a race with the leaders (Alta, Frazer Nash, Aston Martin and Vauxhall 30/98) making a break from a following group featuring another Nash, two Lagonda’s and Andrew in the K3. It was a bit of a cat and mouse chase with the Lagonda’s having the legs on the straights but the Nash and K3 being noticeably quicker through the corners.
Eventually it settled into a train of K3, Nash and Lagonda for the second half of the race with the K3 leading the group and opening a small gap. On the final lap the Nash closed in on Andrew in the K3, with the gap on the line being only 2 hundredths of a second in Andrew’s favour. A bit too close for comfort!
Fantastic to see the K3 in 5th place overall, especially from a starting position of 14th and also being the smallest capacity car on the grid.
It was also great to see so many Triple-M ‘fans’ in the paddock and pleasing to see lots of interest in the K3’s by many people who had no knowledge of the car.
A big thanks must go to Oliver Richardson for his pit support and prep of the car.
Analysis of the track logging data after the race made interesting reading. In the 3 speed traps K3011 was only 12th/15th/11th fastest. However, in the 3 sectors by time, the K3 was 6th/ 7th/ 7th , really emphasizing the strengths of the lap being in the corners.
An amazing weekend, a wonderful race, great weather – just how a K3 should be enjoyed.

I was able to watch the qualifying and the race live on TV and was very impressed by the fast times Louis and Andrew achieved. The race went fantastically well for Andrew; he really let his K3 fly. Andrew is also a good racer, and Oliver is an excellent mechanic! I take my hat off to Andrew and Oliver and congratulate you all – including Elisabeth!

What a fantastic result for Andrew and his support team of owner Elizabeth and Oliver.
The late and much missed Peter Green would have been so proud.
