L Type Profile
The K series cars were not being sold in sufficient numbers to justify the separate production of their K type engines so MG introduced a cheaper model as a direct replaced for the F type. The new engine variant was known as the KC and was a cheaper production version having two carburettors and conventional coil ignition as well as other small changes. The engine was installed in a chassis almost identical to an F type but with the now standard Wolseley four-speed gearbox and twin-plate clutch. The 3' 6" track was retained. The model was known as the L Magna, despite its smaller 1086cc ‘Magnette’ engine and could be had as a four-seat tourer, known as the L1, or a two-seat sports car, known as an L2. Both body styles had flowing ‘swept’ wings and short running boards, which made the cars very attractive. The lighter bodies and chassis also endowed the cars with good performance and the short-stroke, smooth running engine really came into its own. The one blot on the landscape came with the introduction of the L type ‘Continental Coupé’, a style of saloon car much favoured by Cecil Kimber but which was a commercial disaster. One-hundred Continental Coupé bodied cars, no doubt the minimum that could be ordered from the coachbuilders, was produced and it was over three years before they were all sold, long after the L type had ceased production. An L1 saloon was also produced, similar in style to the F Salonnette but it, too, proved not to be popular.
